Recently I purchased the Nikon D60 SLR camera and I didn’t get an extra battery because Nikon says you can take up to 500 pictures with the battery that came with it. What do you think? Should I get a spare?

You don’t need one, but you will want one.
There is nothing worse than running out of battery life and missing an amazing picture moment. Not to mention, that the 500 pictures limit doesn’t include you flipping through the LCD screen which takes up a lot of power.
The feel of relief that the spare battery in your pocket gives you is worth it.

I will be rare that you will find yourself shooting more than 250 shots at a time, let alone 500.
Just do what the pros do .. charge your battery the night before you are going to be shooting.
