Get a D3000 when it comes out, and get a 55-200mm lens with it in addition to the included 18-55 lens.

If you have a little more budget, the Nikon D90 is an excellent buy at its pricepoint. ISO and Image quality is a big jump over those Nikon D3000 or D5000.

Triple 7 needs to shut it. Canon sucks at simplicity. Right now though. I have the D60 and am quite happy. I haven't read much about the D3000 to say which one rocks more but from what I've heard it seems that this camera is pretty much the D60, which is pretty much the D40. If you are just starting out then a D40 wouldn't be too bad. The D60;however, will help you out if you are starting out and plan to pursue photography a bit more in depth. I actually skimmed over the description of the D3000 and the D60 still seems superior thought they are exactly the same. The D3000 on NikonUSA is going for about 599 but the D60 for about 650. If you got to Wolf Cameras you can get the D60 for 599 and you don't pay taxes and get free shipping.

Nikon D3000 is not a big upgrade from D60 which is is $540.It come with bigger 3" LCD screen,11-point autofocus so I think $599 is a reasonable price, not so cheap.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JCS…
another good model for under $800 are Nikon D5000 or Canon T1ihttp://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i…

Well I think you should save up $50 and get a D5000, or find it cheaper online at ebay or amazon if you can find it for under $800, I saw one lady who bought it from amazon, she bought it for like $758 with no shipping or sales tax, but it all depends on whether the shipper is nice enough.
