The $5,000 Nikon D3 is better than anything Canon has for event or action work.
The high-end Canons are better for landscapes, studio, and portrait photography.
Canon used to be better than Nikon at high ISOs, but now Nikon is better, with the D3.
Of course, if you want to spend less money, different models have different advantages.

i’ve found that a lot more portraits are done with canon and nikon is used more for landscapes and sports

the nikon d40 is one of the very best slrs.
