canon slrs have better high iso quality(800 -6400)
low iso’s equal
nikon has a more accurate flash system so images will be better in auto mode for the nikons

before i was thinking whether id buy canon or nikon. but i bought canon. i have canon 350d right now. works very nice. worth every penny. check out this site. dpreview.com. they got reviews and pictures of that camera, and you can compare pictures from this camera and that camera. good luck.

This is such a subjective thing, you need to look at sample images on review sites and see what you think.
You can see a few Nikon shots on my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinsteiâ€¦ and while you are there, you can just search for ANY camera that you want and you will see thousands of samples taken by amateurs and pros alike. See if you can tell the difference. (You can’t.)
Follow lenslender’s advice. See which camera YOU like better. My bias is towards Nikon, but you might think they are too big or too heavy. Vanilla vs. chocolate.

Well, do you have a film SLR. If you do, then choose whatever brand you have, your lenses will fit both. I just bought a canon digital rebel xt. It takes AMAZING pictures on both auto and manual. The auto focus is easy to use and works so much better than the film one did. You can also clearly see where the picture will blur and everything else. I was very impressed with the camera for the price I paid. And I have had it for a month and still can’t put it down.
The pictures, since it has 8 mp come out so that they can be blown up HUGE and it has multiple settings for what quality you want.
If you like black and white, it is also good with black and white, although my darkroom b & w’s have more contrast. The B & W on this camera turns out better than any other digital I have had.
I am truly amazed by this camera, also I went to a wedding last week and I had several people walk up to me to ask me about it but I had a girl come talk to me whose into photography too and shes had her Rebel XT for a year and said she loves the camera. She like me can’t put it down.

Nikon and Canon are the two top D-SLR manufacturers. Most pros shooting digital will be using a camera made by one or the other. The huge selection of lenses and accessories is what most attracts pros to these brands. They know they can buy or rent lenses for any kind of photography.
Neither brand is better. They are equal. Asking for an opinion on who is better between Nikon and Canon is like asking for an opinion on religion. Both sides will argue until they are unconscious. The truth is, both Nikon and Canon make fantastic cameras and lenses. It’s almost pointless to debate over who is better because the other company will announce something even better next year. You can’t lose with either choice.
Whatever camera you choose, it will go out of date eventually. That’s the nature of electronics and you can’t escape it. Both Nikon and Canon are very competitive and both of them invent new cameras continuously.
What is important for you to consider, however, is the lens and accessory SYSTEM you are buying into. Once you start investing money into lenses, flashes and accessories you will be more and more invested into one brand or the other. Cameras will go out of date in 2 years. Lenses and accessories will last you much longer. Have a look at the lenses, flashes and other gear available from the manufacturers. Think about what you will be interested in doing pictures of and look at the lenses and accessories each company offers to get you there.
Consider the availability of rental lenses and other equipment in your area. Being able to rent a lens for your camera can give you a lots of creative choices without needing to buy expensive lenses.
Finally, what matters the most is picking the camera you most love to use. Features and specification mean nothing if you don’t love using the camera. Try equivilant cameras at your local camera store. Maybe rent some for a week to really try them out. Choose the one that makes you want to make thousands of pictures.
