Have always wanted a SLR camera but on a budget. I am doing a design course and there is a photography module in it, we use a Canon camera (think it is a 5D but not sure) but I would like to get my own camera. Have done some research and Canon seems to be the best make.
Looking to buy a good quality camera that will last and produce good pictures.
Also if anybody has any tips on good lens for either camera. Thanks!

Would say you are probably still better off using the 5D that you use on your course, that camera is miles better than both of these cameras.

The 450D is better than the 1000D.
Differences include:
9 AF points on the 450D (vs. 7 AF points on the 1000D)
14 bit raw A/D conversion
better grip on the 450D
better viewfinder on the 450D
larger LCD on the 450D
faster burst speed
12MP on the 450D (vs. 10MP on the 1000D)
LCD proximity sensor
and more…
of course if you can’t afford the 450D, get the 1000D.
As for a lens (look at the general purpose page):http://the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Len…

Have you looked into the Canon Rebel XT or XTi? They’re both pretty good cameras, and cheaper. Which lens you should use really depends on what you’ll be shooting.
