Digital Slrs , How Far Can The Average Starter Lens On An Slr Zoom In?

im not quite sure how the world of SLRs works yet and i still have many questions and my main problem is zoom, on many of the DSLRs that i have looked at it says that the zoom is only 3x optical and i know that my little digital camera has 5x optical zoom, aren’t the DSLRs meant to have better zoom as well as picture quality, your help is much appreciated =]
