The Nikon D40 or D40x. The Nikon D40x is right at your price limit. Available here:http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?…
Either of these are excellent choices, and if money is tight, go for the D40. It’s a superb performer and you’ll never miss the extra megapixels of the D40x. Seriously–with digital SLRs, once you hit 6mp, you won’t see the extra megapixels unless you make huge prints and for most people, not even then. Most people never print bigger than 11×14.

Used by most the press a decade ago.

There is only one Nikon under $600 … it is the FM10.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/11…
The other Nikon 35mm is the F6, $2,000
I usually buy Nikon SLR’s on craigslist … you can find a lot for under $600.
If you are looking for a DSLR, then the only one in that price range is the D40.
