If you want to get the most out of your D700/300 get it which is the main reason why I did. The vertical grip is good but I can do the vertical shots without it just as good. The extra battery life is nice when I went on a week long trip. I took about 1000 pictures so I could of gotten by if I just brought my charger along or a extra battery pack. For the contents I decided to just go with the Nimh double AA batteries. I had some already with the SB-600 speedlight and knew how well they worked. If you end up not getting enough frames per second then go spent the money for the faster newest most expensive battery (don't forget another charger $$ - hum is the new charger backwards computable - oh dear need more ac outlets).
