I AM A PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENT AND BOUGHT THIS LENS FOR MY D-80. IT IS JUST WHAT I NEED TO COMPLETE ALL OF MY ASSIGNMENTS AS IT HAS A VERY GOOD RANGE AND IS NOT CUMBERSOME OR TOO HEAVY. I WILL CONTINUE TO USE THIS LENS FOR YEARS TO COME ON A DAILY BASIS.

VR or not 5.6 at 85mm is not my thing. It is just a kit lens with a nicer range. VR only does so much at certain times anyways.
The Nikkor is built well and focuses very fast. The seal on the mount is a nice addition. The VR is extremely quiet vs. the Sigma 18-200 with OS that sounds like a rabid squirrel. It is compact, and the extension at 85mm is very short. The images are relatively sharp as well.
On the down side, I compared this to the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 and the colors on the sigma were a lot more exciting. It hits f/4.5 at 35mm. Focusing distance is not that great and bokeh is a little boring.
I still think it deserves 4 stars though. If you want a well built compact kit lens with a little extra range and VR then this is the lens for you.

I just recently upgraded from a Nikon D50 to the Nikon D60. The kit lens that came with the D50 (28-80mm) has worked well for me, but the auto focus of that lens doesn’t work on the D60. Seeing that I’ve been spoiled by auto focus, I decided to use the new camera as an opportunity to buy a new lens. I did a lot of research and finally settled on the 16-85mm. I think the previous reviews have been accurate, so I won’t add anything, as far as the technical aspects of the lens. I’m returning the lens for two reasons.
1. For me, it’s too heavy to be used as an every day walk around lens – 1lb. 2oz. I do a lot of hiking, and a lot of sight seeing by foot when we travel, and for those purposes it gets too heavy to hang around my neck for hours at at time.
2. It’s too slow. If I’m not taking pictures of moving objects, it’s very sharp. However, if I’m taking pictures of my kids swinging or running around, even in the action setting, it’s hard to get a clear, stop action shot. I’ve tried using several settings, but still can’t get what I want. And I’ll admit that I’m a big fan of auto anything when it comes to my camera. If I’m grabbing my camera to take a quick picture, I really don’t want to think about settings. My kit lens from the D50 did a great job taking these kind of shots, so I’m not sure why I can’t get this lens to do the same. But the fact that it’s too heavy was a deal breaker for me anyway.
So overall, I think this is probably a great lens, but it’s not the perfect walk around lens I was hoping for.
