I’m looking for a decent SLR, digital of course. But I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations, I prefer a fairly low prize 300-400 $ Canadian at the most.

A USED one. Look for Nikon D1x, D100, or D70.
Or Canon D30, D60, or 10D.
NOT a Rebel! they are built like a cheap toy, and typically handled by people likely to bang then drop them and bring them to beaches (and get sand and salt inside) and fast food restaraunts (handle with greasy ketchupy hands). And stick their fingers in their kids mouths and handle the cameras, or worse, like change diapers. Stay far away from these cheap crap models used!
Unless your shooting for murals or billboards, 6 MP will be plenty of resolution for you. My camera is 5 MP and I never said “gee i wish i had more megapixels”. Most people only need 3.

A used camera will be your best option. On the Canon side, I would look for a Rebel XT (EOS 350D) or the more expensive EOS 20D. The EOS Rebel (300D) and the EOS 10D have 6MP sensors and are not significantly cheaper in price to justify the smaller pixel amount of the sensor and less capable camera.
On the Nikon side, the D70 is the camera I would try to find for this kind of money, but it only has a 6mp sensor even though the rest of the features of the D70 fit very nicely between the Canon Rebel XT and EOS 20D.

Check out the Olympus E-410, i bought a brand new one with lens and filter kit for 480$ 10.0 Mp and Live view excellent photo quality for the money.
